What is "World Cleanup Day"?

World Cleanup Day is an annual global action movement to unite all spheres of society in tackling the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris. It happens on the third Saturday of September.

The initiative was started in 2008 in Estonia with 50,000 volunteers and has grown into a massive movement with millions of participants from over 190 countries and territories. In 2023, World Cleanup Day united a record-breaking 20 million people around the world.

World Cleanup Day is not just about cleaning up litter; it is also about raising awareness of the mismanaged waste crisis and inspiring people to take action to create a more sustainable future.

Here are some of the goals of World Cleanup Day:

  • To clean up 30% of the world's mismanaged waste by 2025.
  • To raise awareness of the mismanaged waste crisis and its impact on the environment and human health.
  • To inspire people to take action to create a more sustainable future.
  • To promote collaboration between governments, businesses, and individuals to address the mismanaged waste crisis.

If you would like to participate in World Cleanup Day, you can find a local cleanup event near you or start your own. You can also support the movement by donating to Let's Do It! World, the organization behind World Cleanup Day.

Together, we can make a difference and create a cleaner and more sustainable world.
