Duolingoで "Two jin of apples" と出てきます。

 Duolingo(デュオリンゴ)で学習されているのですね!

  • Two jin of apples(2斤のりんご)

  • Two kilos of apples(2キロのりんご)

  • Two pounds of apples(2ポンドのりんご)

Duolingoのレッスンでは、他にも「里(lǐ)」などの単位が出てくることがありますが、それも同じように「中国独自の距離の単位(約500メートル)」としてそのまま英語で出てくることがあります。

中国語と英語を同時に学んでいると、こうした文化の橋渡しが見えてきて面白いですよね!

他にもDuolingoのフレーズで「これってどういう意味?」と思うものがあれば、いつでも聞いてくださいね。📋

What is duolingo like?

Duolingo is a popular language learning platform known for its gamified approach and accessibility.1 Here's a breakdown of what it's like:

Core Experience:

  • Game-like Learning: Duolingo presents language learning as a game.2 You earn experience points (XP), progress through levels, unlock new skills, and compete on leaderboards.3 This makes learning feel fun and motivating for many users.
  • Bite-Sized Lessons: Lessons are typically short and can be completed in a few minutes, making it easy to fit language practice into a busy schedule.4
  • Varied Exercises: You'll encounter different types of exercises, including:
    • Translation: Translating sentences between your target language and your native language.
    • Listening Comprehension: Hearing a phrase in the target language and typing it out or selecting the correct translation.
    • Speaking Practice: Repeating phrases or sentences in the target language (voice recognition quality can vary).5
    • Multiple Choice: Selecting the correct word or phrase.6
    • Matching: Pairing words or phrases with their translations.7
  • Visual and Auditory Learning: The app uses images and audio to help you learn vocabulary and pronunciation.8
  • Progress Tracking: Duolingo tracks your progress, showing you which skills you've mastered and which need practice.9 It uses a spaced repetition system to revisit previously learned material.10
  • Motivational Features: Streaks (consecutive days of practice), achievements, and leaderboards are designed to keep you engaged and coming back for more.11
  • Multiple Languages: Duolingo offers a wide variety of languages to learn (40+), depending on your native language.12

What it's like to use:

  • User-Friendly Interface: The app is generally intuitive and easy to navigate.13
  • Accessibility: It's available on iOS and Android devices, as well as a web browser, allowing you to learn anywhere, anytime.14
  • Free with Optional Subscription: The core language learning content is free. However, a paid subscription (Super Duolingo) offers benefits like no ads, offline access, and unlimited hearts (lives).15
  • Repetitive: While the gamification is engaging, some users find the exercises repetitive.16
  • Focus on Vocabulary and Basic Grammar: Duolingo is excellent for building a foundational vocabulary and understanding basic grammatical structures.17 However, it might not be sufficient for achieving fluency on its own.
  • Varying Course Quality: The depth and quality of courses can differ between languages. Some may have more comprehensive content than others.
  • "Duolingo Bird" (Duo): The app features a persistent owl mascot that provides encouragement and reminders, which some users find endearing and others find a bit much.18
  • Stories and Podcasts (in some languages): Some courses offer interactive stories and podcasts to improve listening comprehension and provide context.19
  • "Adventures": A more recent feature that presents game-like scenarios to practice language skills.20

Pros:

  • Free and Accessible: A great way to start learning a language without financial commitment.21
  • Gamified and Motivating: Makes learning fun and encourages consistent practice.22
  • Bite-Sized Lessons: Easy to fit into short periods.23
  • Wide Range of Languages: Offers many language options.24
  • Good for Beginners: Provides a solid foundation in vocabulary and basic grammar.25

Cons:

  • Not Sufficient for Fluency: May need to be supplemented with other learning methods for advanced proficiency.26
  • Speech Recognition Can Be Imperfect: The accuracy of the speaking exercises can sometimes be frustrating.
  • Repetitive Exercises: Can become monotonous for some learners.27
  • Grammar Explanations Can Be Limited: Doesn't always provide in-depth grammatical explanations.
  • Translations Can Be Iffy: Some translations might not always be the most natural or accurate.
  • Frequent Platform Changes: Some users find the constant updates and changes to the platform disruptive.

In conclusion, Duolingo is a valuable tool for beginners to start learning a new language in a fun and engaging way. It's great for building vocabulary and basic grammar skills and encouraging daily practice. However, it's often recommended to supplement Duolingo with other resources, such as language exchange partners, immersion activities, and more in-depth grammar study, to achieve higher levels of fluency.28
