Uric acid

Uric acid is a natural waste product that's created when your body breaks down purines.1 Purines are substances found in some foods and drinks, and they're also produced by your body.2 Normally, uric acid dissolves in your bloodstream and is filtered out by your kidneys, then eliminated in your urine.3

However, if your body produces too much uric acid, or if your kidneys don't filter out enough, it can build up in your blood, a condition called hyperuricemia.4 This can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals, which can cause several health problems.5

Here's a breakdown:

Normal Uric Acid Levels:

  • These can vary slightly between labs, but generally:
    • Men: 2.5 to 7.0 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL)6
    • Women: 1.5 to 6.0 mg/dL7

High Uric Acid (Hyperuricemia):

  • When uric acid levels are consistently above the normal range, it can increase the risk of:8
    • Gout: A painful form of arthritis caused by uric acid crystals forming in the joints.9
    • Kidney stones: Uric acid crystals can also form in the kidneys, leading to kidney stones.10
    • Kidney disease: Chronically elevated uric acid levels can contribute to kidney damage.11
    • Some studies indicate possible links to increased risk of, high blood pressure and heart disease.12

Factors Affecting Uric Acid Levels:

  • Diet: Foods high in purines, such as red meat, organ meats, and seafood, can increase uric acid levels.13
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can interfere with uric acid removal.14
  • Obesity.15
  • Kidney disease.16
  • Certain medications.17
  • Genetics.

Why Uric Acid Levels Matter:

  • Monitoring uric acid levels is important, especially for people with a history of gout or kidney stones.18
  • Lifestyle changes and medications can help manage uric acid levels.19

If you have concerns about your uric acid levels, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. They can perform a blood test to measure your levels and provide appropriate guidance.20
