What is Mahjong and how do you play it?

Mahjong is a captivating, tile-based game that originated in China. It is often described as a game of skill, strategy, and calculation, but it also has a healthy dose of luck. Think of it as a much more complex and beautiful version of the card game Rummy.

In Japan, the most popular version is Riichi Mahjong, which adds unique strategic layers like "declaring a ready hand."

1. The Basic Components

A standard set has 136 tiles (in the Japanese version). They are divided into two main categories:

Suits (Numbers 1–9)

  • Pin (Dots): Circles representing coins.

  • Sou (Bamboos): Bamboo sticks (the 1-Sou is usually a bird).

  • Wan (Characters): Kanji characters for numbers.

Honor Tiles

  • Winds: East, South, West, and North.

  • Dragons: Red, Green, and White (blank).

2. The Goal: The Winning Hand

To win, you must be the first to complete a hand of 14 tiles. A standard winning hand follows this simple "formula":

4 Sets + 1 Pair = 14 Tiles

ComponentDescriptionExample
Chow (Chi)A sequence of 3 tiles in the same suit.4-5-6 of Dots
Pung (Pon)Three of the exact same tile.Three "Red Dragons"
Kong (Kan)Four of the exact same tile.Four "East Winds"
Pair (Atama)Two identical tiles.Two "1-Bamboos"

3. How to Play: The Flow of the Game

The game is typically played by 4 players.

  1. The Setup: Each player starts with 13 tiles.

  2. Draw and Discard: On your turn, you draw one tile from the "wall" (the stack) and discard one tile into the center.

  3. Taking from Others: If another player discards a tile you need to complete a set, you can call it out:

    • "Pon!" to complete a triplet.

    • "Chi!" to complete a sequence (only from the player to your left).

  4. Going Out: When you are one tile away from winning (Tenpai), you wait for that last tile.

4. How to Win

There are two ways to complete your 14th tile:

  • Tsumo: You draw the winning tile yourself.

  • Ron: Someone else discards the tile you need.

Important Rule: In Riichi Mahjong, your hand must have at least one Yaku (a specific pattern or condition) to win. A simple one for beginners is "All Simples" (no 1s, 9s, or Honor tiles) or having a triplet of your own Wind or a Dragon.

💡 Beginner Tips for Success

  • Focus on one suit: Early on, try to keep tiles that are close in number (like 3, 4, 5) as they are easier to turn into sequences.

  • Don't "Call" too much: Calling "Pon" or "Chi" reveals your hand and makes it harder to change strategy. Keeping your hand "closed" often leads to higher scores.

  • Watch the discards: Look at what others are throwing away. If no one is discarding "Dots," they might be building a hand with them!

  • Enjoy the social aspect: Mahjong is as much about the conversation and the "flow" of the table as it is about the tiles.

Mahjong is excellent for keeping the mind sharp because it requires constant decision-making and memory. Are you looking to teach this to someone else, or are you interested in a specific rule like scoring?
