What is A jack-o'-lantern?

A jack-o'-lantern is a carved pumpkin most commonly associated with the Halloween holiday.

Here are the key details about it:

  • Tradition: The practice involves carving a face (often spooky, silly, or artistic) into a hollowed-out pumpkin and placing a light source—traditionally a candle or, nowadays, an electric light or LED—inside so it glows in the dark.

  • Origins: The custom originated in Ireland and Scotland, where people originally carved turnips, potatoes, or beets to ward off a mythical wandering spirit named "Stingy Jack." When Irish and Scottish immigrants moved to North America in the 19th century, they discovered that native pumpkins were much larger and much easier to carve, permanently changing the tradition.

  • Folklore: According to Irish folklore, Stingy Jack tricked the Devil and was cursed to roam the earth with only a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way. Locals began calling his glowing light "Jack of the Lantern," which eventually became "jack-o'-lantern."
